Activities with Your Puppy#/Title#
Many breeds have a long history of being bred for a specific job. If you chose a Border Collie puppy, for instance, you have a very active puppy on your hands. If you don't have sheep for your puppy to expend her genetic energy on, you need to come up with another job for her to do. Sporting breeds, such as Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers, also were bred for a job. If you don't hunt, you need to find something else for them to do, or they can become hyperactive and destructive. High-energy puppies benefit from energetic activities that the two of you can share.
However, don't think that you have to have a high-energy breed to have fun with your puppy. Lower-key puppies can enjoy plenty of activities, too. Also, although some registries only allow purebred dogs to participate, others allow mixed-breed puppies to join in the fun.
After trying an activity with your puppy, you may find that she doesn't seem well suited for it. Or she may not have the build or robust strength for a certain sport. Not all of us are athletes. Not everyone loves outdoor activities. Not all puppies are suited for
different activities, and this is perfectly okay. Don't force your puppy to participate in something that she doesn't enjoy. These activities are supposed to be fun for you two to share, so resist the temptation to put your competitive spirit ahead of your puppy's welfare. There are plenty of other opportunities for you to share with your puppy. And she's already a pro at her most important activitybeing your family companion.
